What options are available for language and cultural mediation?
May 5, 2026

Various forms of support are available for patients who face language barriers. The use of qualified interpreters or language and cultural mediators is the most reliable way to ensure accurate communication. Depending on their training and experience, they also take into account cultural aspects of communication, such as differing perceptions of illness, treatment, or the healthcare system. They can be deployed in person, by phone, or via video.

In practice, multilingual staff are also frequently involved. While this may seem helpful in day-to-day situations, it is only effective if the interpreters possess the necessary linguistic and medical skills required for accurate and comprehensive interpretation.

Digital and analog tools can also be used to provide support, such as translation apps, multilingual informational materials, or visual communication aids. These are particularly well-suited for simple content or as a supplement, but are of limited use for complex medical discussions.

It is the responsibility of healthcare professionals to ensure effective communication, even when language barriers exist. Structured planning, training, and continuing education help make practical language and cultural mediation strategies available in the healthcare sector.
