25 Years of Expertise and New Approaches: The DZK is Reorganizing Itself Within the Expert Group
The German Central Committee against (DZK) honors Prof. Dr. Tom Schaberg for his exceptional, long-standing commitment: For more than 25 years, the pulmonologist and infectious disease specialist has played a pioneering role in the DZK’s work as a board member and expert.
Prof. Schaberg, who served as chief physician at the Center for Pulmonology at the Rotenburg Diakonieklinikum for more than 22 years, is known far beyond Germany’s borders as the author of numerous scholarly publications. As the lead author of clinical guidelines, he has played a decisive role in shaping the advancement of pulmonology, infectious diseases, and tuberculosis medicine. In addition, he has been contributing his expertise since 2006 to the “Pandemic Respiratory Infections” Expert Advisory Board at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), where he focuses intensively on respiratory infectious diseases—including COVID-19.
The DZK extends its heartfelt thanks to Prof. Schaberg for a quarter-century of outstanding service and personal dedication.
At the same time, the DZK is pleased to welcome Dr. Brit Häcker on board as an expert advisor. Dr. Häcker was closely associated with the DZK as a medical staff member from 2017 to 2025. She possesses broad clinical and scientific expertise in tuberculosis, pulmonary medicine, and infectious diseases. In addition to her work at the DZK, her career has taken her to the Borstel Research Center, the Helios Klinikum Emil von Behring, and Doctors Without Borders in Somalia, among other places. She is currently leading the INFRALINK project at the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research .
The DZK thanks both of them for their outstanding dedication and looks forward to continuing their successful collaboration in this new configuration.
