Vaccination

There is a BCG vaccination against tuberculosis. BCG stands for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin. The vaccination contains weakened bacteria that do not cause the disease in humans but which should train the immune system. Vaccination can prevent severe and complicated disease progressions in infants and young children. However, the vaccination does not provide sufficient protection against infection or tuberculosis. Therefore, vaccination has not been recommended in Germany since 1998. However, it is used worldwide in many countries where tuberculosis is common. Intensive research is being conducted into the development of a new and more effective vaccine.
