Current tuberculosis situation worldwide

According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), 10,6 million people worldwide contracted tuberculosis in 2021, and about 1.6 million people died from it. Tuberculosis is thus one of the ten most frequent causes of death worldwide. Approximately half a million patients had multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis, which is much more difficult to treat and thus associated with increased mortality. The countries most affected are India, Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Pakistan, and South Africa, which account for two thirds of tuberculosis cases worldwide.

For the patients affected, the disease often means a social and financial problem in addition to the health impairment. WHO has set itself the goal of ending the global tuberculosis epidemic by 2035 and has developed the End TB Strategy to that end.
